My first "professional" musicians union gig was when I played drums with my band at age 11 in the gymnasium of my grammar school for the student body.
My father, who organized the performance, was told by the principal that the only way it could happen is if I joined the musicians union. So, I did.
Featured in the band were locals who happened to be some of the greatest musicians ever: vocalist Sheila Jordan, guitarist Harry Leahey, my brother Barry Miles on piano, bassist Tom Anthony and saxophonist Bob "Mousie" Miller.
What a way to start!
